Councillors Delay Decision On Ennis Crematorium

Clare County Councillors have delayed a decision on a planned crematorium and large graveyard in Ennis.

Members will now reconvene on Friday to decide whether they will change the county development plan to allow the project to proceed.

Fenloe Properties has applied to construct a Crematorium, memorial gardens and cemetery at Kildysert Road, Ballaghfadda Ennis.

The area is currently zoned as residential and while the planning department has recommended that it be given the green light, a material contravention of the county development plan is required for permission to be granted.

The application calls for a graveyard with 3,827 graves.  However, Director of Services Gerard Dollard has informed Councillors that if the application is permitted that would be reduced by 650 under the planning restrictions to allow for a buffer zone on site.

Four submissions were received at the early stages of the process – with uncertainty now standing over local undertakers and whether their concerns have been addressed.

Councillors adjourned their monthly meeting yesterday to discuss the issues with the stake holders present and on that basis decided to call an emergency meeting on Friday morning.

This follows the decision to vote down the sale of lands in Shannon for a similar project by a vote of 11 to 14 with two abstentions.
