Clare CEO: Hands are Tied on Storm Repairs

The head of Clare County Council says joined up thinking is needed to allow wide-scale storm repair and coastal protection works to be carried out throughout the county.

Tom Coughlan's comments come as frustration and worry grows in areas hit by this year's storm, amid fears of a repeat this winter.

The government was first urged to fund storm repairs and coastal protection works hours after the winds abated in January and February.

Now, however, frustration seems to be growing in a number of communities where it's feared another winter could bring more devastation.

The County Council was given 16.8 million euro, but had sought twenty million more and is awaiting a final decision in respect of a number of multi-million euro applications.

The local authority's Chief Executive Tom Coughlan feels their hands are somewhat tied until  an announcement is made.

Yet in communities along the county's coast, there are fears the delays could lead to devastation, because much-needed repair and protection works are unlikely to be carried out in time for this winter.

Carrigaholt postmaster Pat Gavin says people there are concerned.

A meeting is being sought with new OPW Minister Simon Harris, while in one community, where homes were flooded in January, locals say they're prepared to protest in Dublin if that's what it takes.
