New government figures show the state is paying a high price for absenteeism in the public sector.
The annual cost of sick leave is around €430 million.

The figures – seen by The Irish Times – show absenteeism is highest in the Gardai and the health services.
The HSE says the data is from 2012 and the number of sick days taken by health workers has been significantly reduced in recent months.
