US President Barack Obama says his military is on stand-by to take targeted strikes on Islamist militants in Iraq.
American military aircraft have already airdropped food and water to Iraqis threatened by the militants.

Tens of thousands of people – mostly Christians – were forced to leave their homes and flee into the mountains in Northern Iraq.
The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the attacks.
