Calls for Reversal of Cuts to Guidance Counsellors

An East Clare guidance counsellor says a new report showing school-leavers feel "under-prepared" shows the need for cuts to her profession to be reversed.

The ESRI study shows over 90 per cent of third level students surveyed felt their learning experience was "Very Different" to school –  with many experiencing difficulties in meeting the expected standards.

The think-tank says guidance counselling should be provided to students in working class schools from an earlier age to raise their expectations.

However, Olivia O'Connor of St Joseph's Secondary School in Tulla says the opposite has been true in recent years, because of cutbacks which are affecting students throughout the country.
