Day of Action at Foynes Direct Provision Centre

Clare Immigrant Support Centre is backing a day of action calling for the closure of the Mount Trenchard Direct Provision centre in Foynes.

Campaigners say the 55 asylum seekers who are being housed in the unit are living in isolation and depression.

Today's protest follows action by a number of men living at Mount Trenchard last week.

The demonstration organised by Doras Luimní is backed by the Irish Refugee Council, Clare Immigrant Support Centre and other bodies working with Asylum seekers.

A number of the men resident in the facility have reportedly taken part in hunger strikes – in protest of conditions there.

In a statement to Clare FM the Reception & Integration Agency – the body responsible for Direct Provision Centres – it says it remains in close contact with all parties.

The RIA has confirmed it did transfer a number of residents who had raised issues in recent days.

However it says it has been unable to confirm reports of a hunger strike – with the exception of one person who was accepting food today.
