Clare County Council hopes that an island on Lough Derg can add to the county's tourism offerings, when it’s sale to the local authority is completed.
Holy Island, also known as Inis Cealtra, is partly-owned by the Office of Public Works and a private party.

The local authority now says it is in advanced talks to purchase it, with some help from government.
The price tag for the former monastic settlement is not known.
