Scotland Rejects Independence

David Cameron says the Scottish independence debate has been "settled for a generation" and now's the time for the "United Kingdom to come together and to move forward".

The British Prime Minister has been speaking on the steps of Downing Street – as Scotland votes to stay part of the UK.

55% of voters rejected independence, while the turnout was huge, at just under 85%.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond accepted defeat this morning, but warned that Westminster promises that were made to try and sway voters must be kept.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach says Ireland respects the decision of the Scottish people to stay in the UK.

In a statement, Enda Kenny said the expected developments on devolution for Scotland will be closely followed in this country, and we're committed to deepening the already close relationships across these islands.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan says the Irish government will be in close contact with London, Edinburgh and other administrations on how to proceed with enhanced devolution.
