The Minister for Finance says Irish Dance Classes do not come under a lower rate of VAT because of EU directives.
Michael Noonan has been responding to a campaign led by Kilrush set dancing teacher John Fennell.

Mr Fennell says he's now taking his action to the European Parliament – as it stands Ballet has a special status and has a VAT rate of 0% and 9%.
Speaking in the Seanad Minister Noonan outlined a number of exemptions Irish Dance can avail of – overall he says the overall classification is down to rules outside of his control.
