Irish Water Issues Clarification On Rented Properties

Irish Water's moved to clarify the liability of landlords and tenants regarding who pays the water bill.

The new utility company says that a tenant is responsible for paying for their own usage, but that in the event that a tenant hasn't registered with Irish Water it will contact the landlord to ensure the responsible party receives the bill.

Irish water says it will announce further details of this shortly.

It's also outlined that if a tenant moves out of a rental property without settling and closing their account, they still remain liable and Irish Water will follow the matter up in the 'standard ways'.

Earlier, the Tánaiste says both the public and politicians are facing delays when raising complaints with Irish Water.

Joan Burton says utility companies should deal with customers in an efficient and timely way.

Here in Clare, meanwhile, one Councillor who's described Irish Water as "a complete shambles" says public anger is palpable in the county.

Ennis area Fianna Fáil Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy says people feel they're paying more for an inferior water service.
