Truck Drivers Call for Action on Motor Tax

Truckers are seeking a meeting with the Ministers for Transport and Finance to discuss the amount of road tax they pay.

It comes after a demonstration by members of the Irish Road Haulage Association this morning, which saw up to 500 lorries delayed leaving Dublin Port.

The IRHA says it has subsequently received a statement from the Department of Transport indicating that it is looking to remedy the industry difficulty on road tax.

The Association says its members have to pay 4,000 road tax, which is over 5 times more than in the North and Britain.

IRHA President and Bunratty haulier Eoin Gavin says some truckers have re-registered abroad to bring down their costs.
