Report: New Lower Charge For Water

The Government is reported to be considering a cap of around €300 for water charges for families with adult children.

That would be well below the €424 charge to be imposed on those who fail to register for the utility.

The Irish Times reports that the lower charge for families would apply until metering comes in.

Today, Cabinet meets ahead of a gathering of the Economic Management Council later this week, which will consider the revised water package in further detail.

A final plan is expected to be announced next week.

It comes as one Clare government TD admits the coalition is now looking for 'damage limitation' in terms of Irish Water.

Labour Deputy Michael McNamara feels a lot of mistakes have been made in setting up the new state utility.

Meanwhile, it appears that people in Clare have been slow to sign up with Irish Water.

A poll of over 330 people on the clare.fm website has found that only 30% of respondents have registered with the new state utility.

Seven in ten have yet to do so.

The original deadline to register your household with Irish Water ran out on Friday, but it has been extended to the end of November.
