Council Plans Further Storm Repairs In 2015

One year on from the first storms which battered Clare's coast last year, around six million euro has been spent on repairs.

Storms Christine and Bridget brought untold damage to Clare's coastline in January and February of last year, and caused nearly €36 million worth of damage to a number of communities.

Much of the money spent by Clare County Council has been in some of the worst-affected areas of Lahinch, Kilkee, Spanish Point, Liscannor and along Loop Head.

€2 million has been spent on rehabilitating roads, while the mere clean-up itself cost around 1 million euro.

While a total of €6 million has been spent, Clare County Council had been allocated €16.7 million, and a source with the local authority has told Clare FM that they are working on the presumption that the unspent portion is being carried forward.

An exact program of works is being finalised, and further repair works will be carried out along the coast this year but at least two major projects will progress in the immediate future.

A contractor is close to being appointed to carry out remediation works at Kilkee, while a consultant is also being chosen to carry out a study on the protection works needed at Clohaninchy where a dozen homes were flooded one year ago.
