Reports Government will urge rejection of Greek debt forgiveness

The Government is set to urge its European partners to reject any outright debt forgiveness for Greece.

According to the Sunday Business Post, the Cabinet's Economic Management Council met last week to agree that Ireland shouldn't support any push for a debt write-down.

It's reported that Government officials are concerned that granting the request from Greece's anti-austerity coalition would "encourage extreme parties across Europe".

The news comes ahead of a Eurozone Finance Ministers meeting on Wednesday – while EU Heads of Government will meet on Thursday.

Meanwhile, economists and trade unions in favour of a write-down for Greece are meeting in Dublin today.

Syriza supporter Dr Dimitros Sotiropoulos- who advices the Greek Finance Ministry – says he's confident his country can secure debt forgiveness.
