Cautious Welcome to Call for Mother and Baby Home Memorial

Renewed calls for a memorial to commemorate Clare's former county nursery are being cautiously welcomed.

The idea has been raised at Clare County Council level following on from the inclusion of the Kilrush Mother and Baby home in a Government inquiry into the facilities across the country.

The local authority  has been asked to acknowledge it's own historic role as a local health authority which sent young unmarried women to the Kilrush Mother and Baby Home as well as the Good Shepperd Laundry in Limerick during the 1940's and 50's.

Very little detail is known about the operations of the Kilrush home and PRO of the town's Historical Society Paddy Waldron says it might be too soon to have a memorial.
