Mixed Reaction to Irish Water Plans in Clare

There's been a mixed reaction to Irish Water's 25 year plan here in Clare.

The document prioritises sewage treatment facilities for areas like Kilrush and Liscannor and upgrades to the water treatment plant in Shannon.

The programme also says it will take 25 years before leakage in the system is brought back to an acceptable level.

The new Irish Water programme marks the first time a national water infrastruture programme has been created in the History of the state.

Amongst many items the state utility has prioritised Shannon's  waste water treatment plant as a priority –  as it is not currently up to EU Standards.

The issue has caused issues for the town and its surroundings for a number of years – and local independent Cllr Gerry Flynn says he'll cautiously welcome the news.

Meanwhile the document has also prioritised five Clare towns where raw sewage is flowing into the sea – Ballyvaughan, Clarecastle, Kilkee, Kilrush and Liscannor.

Local business man and former president of the Irish Hotels Ferderation Michael Vaughan is welcoming Irish Water's plan to tackle the problem.

He says it's been an issue for tourist operators over the years.

The document also aims to have all boil water notices lifted by 2021.

Head of asset management at Irish Water, Jerry Grant, says they're making progress on taking people off the restrictions.
