Mixed Reaction to Livestock Theft Plans

Clare farmers have given a mixed reaction to a new program which aims to combat cattle rustling on farms throughout the country.

Information on security methods are to be provided to farmers under a multi-agency scheme, while a reward is also being offered to those who supply details that lead to a conviction.

However, some who have seen animals taken from their farms aren't convinced it will work.

The Clare branch of the IFA estimates that 35 cattle have been taken from farms in Clare over the past three years, while annually hundreds of animals are stolen by cattle rustlers throughout Ireland.

Gardai, Crimestoppers and the Irish Farmers Association have joined forces in the hope of increasing the detection rates for the theft of cattle and sheep.

The campaign also aims to provide advice to farmers about the best possible ways to combat this type of crime.

Head of the IFA in Co. Clare Andrew Dundass says this intiative is important, because the impact of cattle thefts on farmers is huge.

As part of efforts to catch the criminals concerned, the IFA is offering a ten thousand euro reward to those who provide information that leads to a conviction.
