Shannon Senator Welcomes Government’s Aer Lingus Decision

A Shannon Senator who threatened to resign from Fine Gael over the sale of Aer Lingus has welcomed the decision not to accept IAG's takeover offer for the airline.

Transport Minister Paschal Donohue says the government is not yet in a position to accept the bid, because more information is needed on potential job cuts and because valuable Heathrow slots must be extended beyond five years.

He did, however, leave it open for a fresh offer to be made with better guarantees.

His Fine Gael colleague Senator Tony Mulcahy feels the Minister's decision is correct, though one prominent industry figure has described it as "gombeen politics at its worst".

Cityjet chairman Pat Byrne feels the Government's handling of the crisis has been "reckless".
