Irish Water says plans to use water from the River Shannon to shore up supply in the East and Midlands remain firmly on the table.
The state utility has published a report which outlines how the demand on water in Dublin alone will increase by 50 per cent by 2050, and that outages could become more common.

The report concludes that a new water source is needed, but this has led to renewed concerns here given that one plan to address this has been to extract water from the River Shannon.
