Sporting Legends Honoured at Clare Reception

3 of Clare’s most successful sportsmen of recent years have had their achievements recognised by the county council.

Rugby players Anthony Foley and Marcus Horan picked up Heineken Cup Winners medals in 2006 and 2008 while Horan also became the first Clare man to win a grandslam with Ireland.

Cathal Murphy won a silver medal for Alpine Skiing in February’s Special Olympics World Winter Games and friends and family of all 3 men were on hand to congratulate them at last night’s civic reception in Ennis.

Anthony Foley has declared his ambition to be head coach of Munster Rugby.

The Killaloe man hung up his boots last year after more than 200 appearances for the province in a career which also earned him 62 Ireland caps.

Since his retirement, Axel has been technical advisor to the current senior Munster squad as well as fulfilling coaching roles with the U-20’s and the Munster A’s.

Speaking at last night’s Civic Reception for himself, Marcus Horan and Skier Cathal Murphy, Foley told Clare FM he held the position in high regard:
