Player absence overshadows Republic’s win over Northern Ireland

The Republic of Ireland’s 5-0 Carling Nations cup win over Northern Ireland is continuing to get overshadowed by the players who did not make themselves available.

Stephen Ward and Simon Cox each scored their first goals for Ireland while Robbie Keane scored twice, Cathcart scored an own goal to give the home side a resounding victory.

James Mc Carthy and Marc Wilson both failed to join up with the squad with Mc Carthy citing injury as the reason, the F.A.I confirmed they received a scan of Mc McCarthy’s injured ankle from Wigan but say that it showed no evidence of significant injury.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni says players must make themselves available to be assessed by their medical team before being ruled out of games.
