Oisin Hickey had goaled after 49 minutes to give Clare a three point lead before the late drama.
Galway then started the extra period brighter and led at the interval by 1-19 to 1-16 and despite scores from Colm Galvin and Aaron Cunningham Galway led by their impressive captain Shane Maloney sealed the win by 5 points.
