Mc Illroy in the hunt at Dubai championship

GOLF

Rory McIlroy produced a stunning back nine performance to put himself in contention to finish as the leading European Tour money earner.

McIlroy recovered from a double-bogey on the second hole at today’s Dubai World Championship to card a six-under par 66, which featured six birdies on a flawless back nine.

McIlroy, who needs to win this weekend and hope the world number one Luke Donald finishes outside the top nine, is now just two shots off the lead, which is held by Sweden’s Peter Hanson.

In contrast, Donald carded three bogeys on his way back to the clubhouse and finished his round on level par.

Shane Lowry is also well-placed in the finale of the European Tour season – the Offaly man is on three under par, while Graeme McDowell finished on one under.
