Varley prospects of Heineken Cup start hang in balance

Damien Varley’s prospects of starting in Munster’s crucial Heineken Cup clash with Edinburgh this weekend lie in the balance this morning.

The hooker has returned to training, having missed Saturday’s loss to Cardiff, and remains in contention to start at Murrayfield.

However, Varley has fallen behind Mike Sherry in Rob Penney’s pecking order in recent weeks, and Sherry could yet be fit to play on Sunday, and will be assessed closer to kick-off.

Munster travel to Scotland knowing a win is vital to have any chance of reaching the knock-out stages of Europe’s top competition, and have been given a boost with news that Paul O’Connell could be fit to start in that potential Quarter-Final.

The lock says he’s confident he’ll make a full recovery from his recent back problem, and his long-term second row partner Donnacha O’Callaghan is wishing him every success.
