Newmarket began the defence of their county senior hurling title with a narrow 1-13 to 1-12 win over Kilmaley in Cusack park on Sunday.
In a tense affair in Cusack park the sides were level at 1-6 each at the break and Kilmaley led by two entering the final minutes but a brace of points from Colin Ryan helped Newmarket to edge the encounter.

Inagh Kilnamona beat Cratloe by 1-18 to 2-12 in the second game in Cusack park and Tubber recorded a 3-16 to 2-14 win over Tulla also in the A championship.
