Clare led by 1-6 to 0-6 at half time, but were made to work for that lead. Waterford lost both midfielders to black cards in that opening half.

The Deise raced into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead before Sean Collins got Clare off the mark. David Tubridy halved the deficit before JJ Hutchinson pointed twice either side of a Shane McGrath point. That left Waterford leading by 0-6 to 0-3 after 22 minutes. Gary Brennan then rattled the Fraher Field net, and two more Shane McGrath points and a second point for Sean Collins left Clare three to the good at the break.

Gary Brennan gave Clare a four point lead early in the second half before Sean Collins and Jamie Malone left Clare 1-9 to 0-6 ahead with 46 minutes played. Shane Brennan then joined his brother Gary on the goalscorer list and Clare led by 2-9 to 0-6.

Waterford responded with two points in a row, their first scores in 30 minutes.

Clare captain Gary Brennan kept the scoreboard ticking over for his side, before Whyte added another for the Deise. Ciaran Russel pointed for Clare before Rory Donnelly bagged Clare's third goal to leave the Banner 3-11 to 0-9 ahead with ten minutes to play.

Waterford got the final three scores of the game but never threatened as Clare won by 3-11 to 0-12.
