The tribeswomen led by 1-5 to 0-5 at half time, with the crucial goal coming from Emma Kilkelly. Claire McMahon was flawless from frees for the Banner, and her sharpshooting would prove vital.

With the score at Galway 1-8 Clare 0-8, the game was temporarily halted due to torrential rain, and after the restart, Clare hit three points in a row, with a McMahon free from all of 50 metres taking the game to extra time.

The drama continued as the All Ireland champions disputed that they had in fact won, claiming that a 45 metre free had gone unregistered. The referee decided though that the extra time would go ahead.

Galway got the perfect tonic in the extra time, as an Aislinn Connolly goal put them into a three point lead, which saw them lead by 2-8 to 0-12 at half time in extra time

The Tribeswomen stretched ahead once more in the second period, and led by three points with just 5 minutes to play.

Two more McMahon frees brought Clare to within the minimum, but a late Galway free clinched a 2-10 to 0-14 win
