Fitzgerald right to play down Limerick result

A texter to Clare FM on Friday described Davy Fitzgerald as Clare’s "Napoleon".

Now I’m not quite sure what the texter may have been getting at with that one but I assume the assertion was more of a great leader rather than the man exiled and ridiculed in his latter years.

Either way Saturday night was a fairly impressive start for his reign as Clare manager.

I know he has already taken charge of Clare in the Waterford crystal but the league start was the big one.

What a change in the Clare side from 12 months ago who could hardly get out of their own half in the league against Limerick in Ennis?

The running game suits this bunch of players but Fitzgerald was at pains to stress after that one result won’t get Clare promoted and neither will one defeat mean they stay in 1B.

What  is interesting about Saturday is whether it will have the affect of raising expectations to unrealistic levels and so get hopes up or will it drive on players to put in a solid 70 minute shift like that every week.

This Sunday’s Waterfrd Crystal final with Tipperary could prove to be very interesting if Clare compete with the aame intensity and rack up their first silverware in three years.

Either way Davy Fitz has Clare going in the right direction-but there is should to be plenty of differing road signs and diversions on the path ahead.
