Morning Focus – Monday 02/03/20

Today on Morning Focus, we discussed the Coronavirus in detail following the confirmation of Ireland’s first case of Covid-19, we spoke about how best to protect yourself from it and then asked how it will affect the work place.

Firstly, Dr Kim Roberts, Assistant Professor of Virology, Trinity College Dublin joined us on the line. As we’ve mentioned in our news, a school in Dublin has been shut down for two weeks after a student was diagnosed with Covid-19. The male student developed symptoms after returning from a trip to northern Italy, and was confirmed as Ireland’s first case on Saturday. We chatted with Dr Roberts about how Covid-19 spreads and how can you make sure you are best protected from it.

Following from that, sticking with the same issue, Derek McKay, Managing Director, Adare Human Resources (Shannon based) joined us on the line as we discussed how will it affect workplaces and would workers get paid if their workplace has to close, and what proactive action should employers take to tackle the disease?

Next on the show, we heard from Clare FM’s Ben Sweeney as he was at the private homecoming for St Flannan’s College following their 22nd Harty Cup title win. The Ennis secondary school took victory over CBC Cork in Mallow yesterday to win their first Cup since 2005. Shortly after 6pm the winners arrived back to a group of family, friends and staff who had gathered at the school to welcome the team back to a private homecoming in the old part of the school.

After our 10am News, we were joined in studio by Sergeant Tríona Brooks, Clare Crime Prevention Officer as Gardaí seek your help in solving local crimes.

Then on Morning Focus, we were joined in studio by Cancer Researcher NUIG, Broadford Resident, as he has been recognised by the Irish Cancer Society for his research into Multiple Myeloma. John is doing a PhD in NUI Galway and his research looks at ways of boosting natural killer cells which can be used to treat cancer but can’t detect Multiple Myeloma.

We then heard from the best-selling author of Owning it and The Confidence Kit, Caroline Foran, ahead of her talk at the Ennis Book Festival (6th – 8th of March) which is taking place this Friday at the Temple Gate Hotel from 2pm. Her first book chronicled her experiences with anxiety and how she coped using her ‘assess and address’ approach. In this session, she will talk about how to make anxiety your ally. It’s free but ticketed. Full details available on www.ennisbookclubfestival.com

To wrap up today’s Morning Focus, we were joined on the line by Former Clare Hurler, Tommy Guilfoyle and Clare FM Commentator, Syl O’Connor to review what was a busy sporting week and an especially great weekend for Clare’s GAA teams. As we mentioned earlier St Flannans College took their twenty-second Harty Cup title with a three point win over CBC Cork. Meanwhile, the Senior Hurlers booked their first place in the National Hurling League semi-final since 2016 after a win over Dublin in Cusack Park yesterday.
And the Clare Senior Footballers shocked Cavan to beat them at home and boost their chances of staying away from the Division 2 relegation battle.
