Morning Focus Monday 16th June

On Mondays Morning Focus John began by speaking to Bernadette McNally, The Director General of the Offices of the Ombudsman and Information Commissioner, as Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has announced an investigation into how complaints are handled by public hospitals in Ireland and has asked members of the public for their assistance.  The Ombudsman's wide ranging investigation will look at how public hospitals across the State manage and investigate complaints from patients and their families.

Up next John Flynn, ICSA Connaught/Ulster Vice-Chairman who also represents the ICSA on the Farm Safety Partnership Advisory Committee, a sub-committee of the Board of the Health and Safety Authority spoke to John about farm safety.  John has appealed to farmers to take action towards reducing farm fatalities.  "There have now been thirteen farm deaths so far in 2014, and the trend is persistently high compared to other industries," said Mr. Flynn, following a meeting of the Farm Safety Partnership Advisory Committee.  "Behavioural changes are now vital to stop this trend, and children in particular should be kept away from dangerous areas like slurry pits, grain stores and working machinery."

Davy Fitzgerald has admitted that Cork were better than his Clare team in the Munster Senior Hurling semi-final but hinted that 'other factors' also impacted on the match.  Clare conceded 2-11 from frees.  John spoke to John Fogarty, Irish Examiner Gaelic games correspondent about thje result and his on the future for the Clare Hurlers. 

Sergeant Joe Downey, Crime Prevention Officer with the Clare Garda Division appealed for the public's assistance with information on crimes committed in the county over the past seven days

Ennis Man, David McCarthy is the recipient of a Traveller Pride Award  in the Sport Category. He joined John in studio to chat about his achievement.  David Essex honoured Travellers at the fifth Traveller Pride Awards, which recognise the achievements and contributions they make to their own community and to Irish society and where winner of the Sport award went to David McCarthy of Ennis who accepted it from broadcaster and "voice of Gaelic games" Michael O'Muircheartaigh at a ceremony in the Pillar Room, Rotunda Hospital, Dublin.

"Sport has been a huge part of my life and I am very grateful to all my family who have followed and supported me through good times and bad. It has taught me many different important life skills and has shaped my life in a positive way. To win the Traveller Pride Award for sport has given me a great boost and proves that hard work and dedication pays off. I have younger family members who are all doing well at an early age in sport so hopefully this trend of young Travellers in sport continues"

Cork Musician, Clare Sands got in touch with the show.  Clare’s bag full of musical equipment was lost in Kilkee on Saturday Night.  There is 500 euro worth of items in it.  It was left outside The greyhound bar in Kilkee.  She believes a group of guys picked it up and she needs to get it back so she can continue to gig across the country.  If you have it please get in touch with the show!
