Morning Focus – Thursday 18th July 2019

On Thursday’s Morning Focus we looked at a how a plan to break up the HSE into six regional healthcare divisions was approved by Cabinet yesterday. Under the Sláintecare plan, each would get a budget based on population.

The Health Services Executive was set up in 2005, taking over from ten local health boards in a bid to cut down on duplication of services. Dr Michael Harty who is Clare’s Independent TD and chairperson of the Oireachtas Health Committee has been speaking about the plan to Gavin Grace.

There was a major announcement for the village of Quin recently with news that Irish Water is investing €4.6 million in a major upgrade of the local waste-water treatment plant. There’s an open event this evening from 5-7pm to unveil the project which is set to see the efficiency of the existing system improve significantly, while also improving the quality of water discharged into the River Rine there, which is a tributary of the Shannon. Irish Water says the current plant was originally constructed to cater for a population of 740, with the works to double that capacity.

The project will get underway by the end of this month and is being carried out in conjunction with Clare County Council, with an estimated completion of summer 2020. Esther White spoke to us from Irish Water
We also asked if this project will lead to a development boom for the village with Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon

Do you come home from shopping, unpack your bags and spend quite a bit of time sorting and binning all plastic and cardboard that our produce is wrapped in?  While many of us are fairly particular about recycling (though there’s always room for improvement), statistics show that levels of waste from packaging continue to be high, and we’re not always keeping pace in terms of recycling.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has this week published information about waste packaging management in 2017. The figures indicate that the generation of waste packaging – including glass, paper, plastics and wood – remained high in 2017. In addition, while recycling rates were high for some waste streams, including glass and wood, recycling levels have levelled off over the last number of years.

Stephen Treacy who is a Senior Scientist for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) spoke to us on the program about what you can continue recycling habits.

We had our weekly parenting advice with Clinical Child Psychologist, Dr Toby Sachsenmaier on what to do with your child going to Summer camps.

According to the next guest we had on Morning Focus, we are set to be hit by a ‘data tsunami’, with everyone and anyone producing all kinds of different data. If you take the average inter-county hurler with a GPS system on their backs and hurleys – they’re pucking out an extraordinary 100 pieces of data per second. Dr Liam Noonan Data Analyst & Cyber Security at LIT believes we’re going to need to create 21,000 data jobs by 2020 just to weather the onslaught and he joined us live on the show.

The Munster Fleadh is well underway in Ennis and competition qualifiers will be among the thousands flocking to Drogheda next month for the All Ireland Fleadh.
A well known Ennis man from the national airwaves and recently appoined the Chair of Culture Ireland Advisory Committee, Kieran Hanrahan joined us to talk all things data.

We got our weekly Arts update of what is happening around Clare with Siobhán Mulchay -Clare County Arts Office.
