It was announced this week that inspections of septic tanks by council officials will begin next year
The Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan said householders who own septic tanks can register with their local authority from now
They have to sign up by February 1st 2013
Inspections will be free – but it’s not yet known how many will be carried out
Yesterday afternoon Phil Hogan told an Oireacthas Committee that it will be significantly cheaper for householders to register early
He also said budgetary constrains will impact on funding for households carrying out works to upgrade septic tanks

Shannon swimmer Chris Bryan has confirmed that he will not be appealing a decision that has dashed his hopes of competing in the London Olympics
After a place opened up in the Men’s Open Water Event, it was hoped that this would be given to the Ennis Swimming Club member who missed out on a spot in London in a photo finish at a race in Portugal earlier this month
Instead though, international governing body FINA have opted to give the place to an athlete from the Oceania region, meaning a competitor from Guam will travel to London instead – he trailed the Clareman by 14 minutes in that Olympic Qualifier in Portugal
Chris and his mother Jackie were guests of Morning Focus earlier this month and his father Rob spoke on the programme earlier this week, before they decided not to pursue any appeal
Jackie Bryan spoke with John to give the family’s reaction and thank people for their support.
