On Thursday’s Morning Focus Marian Egan spoke with Mary Fogarty of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation 

Nurses and midwives are expected to pass an emergency motion for industrial action today, which will include the withdrawal of labour
The issue is top of the agenda on the second day of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation annual conference
The INMO motion is part of a public sector-wide campaign against a government threat to cut the pay of nurses, midwives and other public servants following the rejection of Croke Park 2.

The recent tragic death of Czech national Joseph Pavelka on the street in Ennis highlighted the issue of homelessness for immigrants all over Europe
Recent research from Crosscare Migrant Support found that the number of Irish rough sleepers in London increased by 84% in 2011
Sally Mulready is a Labour party Councillor and Speaker in Hackney, London
She has a solid history of community politics, long term union involvement and championing human rights in Britain and abroad and is the director of an older person’s charity and has a strong commitment to supporting the lives of older people
Marian spoke to Sally about the issue of Irish people living rough in the UK.

Tonight a vigil is being held in memory of Joseph Pavelka
The event is taking place in the Square in Ennis Town Centre at 7 pm close to where the 52 year old was found dead last Saturday night.

The launch of Cindy O’Dell’s photographic exhibition Messengers of Yesterday at Quay Mills Kilrush took place last evening
Cindy is Associate Professor of Art at DePauw University, Indiana and joined Marian in studio 
The images on display explore the Irish American identity in the historical framework of the famine.
 
Sunday’s Famine Commemoration event in Kilrush is a public event and organisers welcome everyone to town for the event

The inaugural Burren Tolkien Convention as part of the Gathering 2013 is kicking off today
Marian spoke with Peter Curtin of the Burren Tolkien Society to get the details
He said the event will highlight Tolkien’s many visits to the Burren and how the world-famous karst landscape and Celtic legends of the West of Ireland may have inspired his masterwork, The Lord of the Rings.

Fiction writer and literary critic Mark Anthony Scott also spoke about the influence of landscape in Tolkien’s work and being the unofficial ‘Poet in residence’ at the Roadside Tavern in Lisdoonvarna this week.

Irish playwright, Screenwriter and Director Peter Sheridan will feature as part of the Doolin Writers Weekend which will be held at Hotel Doolin from 24th to 26th May
His awards include the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, in 1980 he was writer-in residence in the Abbey Theatre, Dublin and his short film, the Breakfast, won several European awards
He also wrote and directed the film ‘The Borstal Boy’ and is a brother to the film director Jim Sheridan
Marian had a chat with Peter about his career and what he’ll be doing at the Doolin Writers Weekend.

The Irish Cancer Society are calling on chemotherapy patients in County Clare to avail of free transportation to and from the Regional Hospital in Limerick
Cancer patients in Clare who are attending Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Limerick for chemotherapy treatment are being encouraged to avail of a free transport service which will bring them to and from their treatment
The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive service offers patients transport from their front door to the door of the hospital and home again which will help to alleviate some of the  stress or difficulty associated with getting to their appointments
