On Tuesdays Morning Focus John began by speaking to Rosie Foley – Killaloe Resident and a former Irish rugby international as there has been widespread condemnation of a newspaper article on women's rugby at a time when the Irish team has reached huge success. Sunday Independent journalist Niamh Horan wrote an article following a visit to Railway Union RFC. She wrote of 'full faces of make-up' and being sandwiched 'cheek to cheek between two other girls', something that the club does not feel reflects their sport or commitment to rugby. John and Rosie spoke about how this may damage women's sport.
There are an estimated 4,400 uninsured drivers in Clare. The Irish Brokers Association is calling on the Government to follow in the footsteps of their British counterparts by introducing a stricter regime for the handling of motorists who are found to be driving without insurance. The broker representative body say that uninsured drivers in this country are costing the motorist an average of €35- €40 in extra premiums to cover the claims related to uninsured drivers and paid out by the MIBI. John spoke to Brian McNelis – Director of General Services at the Irish Brokers Association about these figures and want can be done to reduce them.
Ahead of tomorrows leaving cert results John spoke to Olivia O'Connor – Guidance Counsellor at St Joseph's Tulla. John and Olivia spoke about how students must be feeling and details that have emerged of new proposals to take the heat out of the 'points race'.
An elderly West Clareman is said to be shaken but recovering after he was targeted during a violent break-in in the Kilmihil area on Sunday evening. The man was beaten and tied up by two men, in an incident which has renewed calls for greater community alert schemes. The worrying incident occurred at around 6:20 on Sunday evening, when two criminals targeted the home of the elderly man at Shean West, Kilmihil. The victim was not badly injured in this case, but he has been left shaken in the latest aggravated burglary at the home of residents in West Clare. John spike to a number of people in relation to this incident including Michael Lillis – Neighbour of the victim, Cllr Bill Chambers – Cooraclare and Gerard Scully – Senior Information Officer at Age Action Ireland. In February 2012, a Cree bachelor fled his home and checked into a nursing home after he was twice targeted by a group of robbers, while other similar incidents have been recorded in recent years in Moyasta, Kilmaley, and Inagh as well as in Kilmihil itself.
Clohanes National School has an upcoming celebration. It is 125 years old. The school wishes to mark this anniversary by hosting a range of festivities from the 15th-17th of August 2014. John was joined in studio by Aideen O Mahoney – Principal of Clohanes National School and Mick Carrick – Chairperson of the 125 committee to find out more about the celebrations ahead of the weekend.
