Morning Focus – Wednesday 07/06/17

The midweek edition of Morning Focus brought listeners a mix of news, chat and politics as well as a report on the lively and bustling charity shop run by Mairead Lavery and her team at the NCBI shop on Parnell Street in Ennis.

The show opened with a report showing that drivers in Clare are among those most likely to have penalty points. Gavin was joined on the line by the TD who received the figures, Sinn Féin’s Peadar Tobín.

The attacks on a mosque in Galway were discussed when Gavin was joined on the line by Imam Ibrahim Noonan of the Mary Mosque.

Businesses in the Midwest are being urged to prepare for Brexit with a series of roadshows organised by Enterprise Ireland. A workshop takes place tomorrow (Thurs. June 8) from 8am to 10am. Gavin was joined on the line by Anne Lanigan, Head of the Enterprise Ireland Brexit Unit.

Clarecare, which provides social support to thousands of people across the county is to hold a church gate collection at the weekend. Funds raised will go towards a range of services including a dedicated, purpose-built facility in Shannon.

The show then returned to the topic of illegal dumping as Cllr Cathal Crowe spoke to Gavin about an on-line campaign he’s waging to discover who dumped up to a dozen mattresses at Woodcock Hill in South East Clare. Listen back below:

The topic of gangland crime in Limerick and Dublin was next up for discussion when Gavin was joined on the line by expert criminologist David Wilson. David is the co-presenter of TV3’s ‘Assassins’ which profiles notorious contract killers.

The one hundredth anniversary of the death of MP Willie Redmond was marked by historians Keir McNamara and Joe Power who joined Gavin in studio. Redmond served as MP for East Clare from 1892 until his death in 1917 in World War 1. Listen back below:

The National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) shop on Parnell Street in Ennis was the subject of a feature by Morning Focus Producer Fiona McGarry who went along to see the range of clothes, books and DVDs on offer at bargain prices. Listen back below:

The life-saving work of the RNLI was the next subject for discussion when Joe Queally and Tina Sweeney dropped in to studio. Tina is a volunteer with the RNLI, as is her husband, who had reason to avail of the service himself. Joe and Tina told Gavin about the ‘Moonlight to Midnight’ walk along the flaggy shore, taking place on Friday night (June 9) at 10pm.
