Morning Focus Wednesday 30th April

On Wednesday’s Morning Focus John spoke to Tony Foley, Economist at DCU Business School about his report to accompany the launch of the drinks industry campaign entitled ‘Support Your Local’ and to Matthew Griffin, Chairman Clare Branch of the Vintners Federation of Ireland. The campaign is designed to highlight the sufficient financial and social contribution made by the drinks industry.

Michael Rowland from the Road Safety Authority was on the show to remind political parties and their campaign workers of the need to take care when positioning campaign posters in the lead up to the Local and European elections.  They should not be placed in a way which obscures road signs, particularly those that relate to the Rules of the Road and road user safety.

The Irish Cancer Society launched their annual SunSmart campaign. Rosemary Scott, Health Promotion Officer and Nurse urged the public in Clare to be SunSmart over the coming months and reduce their risk of skin cancer following a report from the National Cancer Registry of Ireland which highlights the high level of skin cancer in Ireland.

Garda Paul Crowley, Ennis Garda Station and member of the GRA’s Central Executive Committee for the Clare Garda Division spoke to John about the rise in violent assaults on Gardai and the need for training in dealing with firearms and explosives, and the difficulties faced by local Gardai in the wake of controversies over phone recordings in Ennis and a high number of penalty points cancellations in Clare.

Coming up this Bank Holiday Monday, Clare FM will air a documentary ‘Brian Boru: The King From Killaloe’. The Producer, Celia Donoghue joined John in studio to talk about this special radio programme celebrating the legendary High King of Ireland and his many connections with Killaloe – the place of his birth.

Rhonda Murphy and Marie Moloney, committee members of the Clare Branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland came to studio to promote the holding of their 20th National Tea Day on Thursday May 1st.  This is a special occasion where thousands of people – friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours come together to drink tea and raise money for the Alzheimer Society.

Finally, Paul Wolfe of Clare Citizens’ Information Service answered some listener queries.
