Morning Focus – Wednesday, October 12th, 2016

Today's show brought listeners a range of expert analysis, debate and analysis of Budget 2017. 1.3 billion euro in new measures was announced as part of Budget 2017. Key measures include a point-five per cent cut in the 3 lower USC rates. Funding for 800 new Gardaí, one thousand new nurses and 2,400 new teachers were also announced. The government's to give a tax refund to first-time buyers, worth 5 percent the value of a newly built home. Parents are to get a subsidy worth almost a thousand euro for every child under 3 to help with childcare costs. Every welfare payment will increase by five euro next year, except under-24s on the Dole who'll get slightly less. Gavin was joined on the line by Dr. Stephen Kinsella, Senior Lecturer in Economics, UL.

We then had a Budget debate with Dep Michael Harty, Ind. TD for Clare, and  Minister for State Pat Breen, Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment, FG.

 

Following this Morning Focus got a reaction to the budget from the older generation with Justin Moran, Age Action Ireland and Mary Morrissey, Clarecastle Daycare Centre.

 

Next on the show we had another debate on the budget with Dep Joe Carey, FG TD for Clare, and Dep Timmy Dooley, FF TD for Clare.

Gavin was joined on the line by Carmel Marnane Director of Tax, Deloitte Limerick.

 

We then had a reaction to the budget from the people on the streets of Ennis.

 

Gavin then spoke with Jackie Bonfield from Midwest Simon for a budget reaction on housing & homelessness before speaking with John Mallon, Forest Ireland for a reaction from smokers.

 

The new management team for the Clare Senior Hurlers has been officially ratified. 3 time All Ireland U21 winning duo Donal Moloney & Gerry O'Connor have reunited for a two year deal as joint managers. They replace Davy Fitzgerald. They joined Gavin on the line to discuss the change.

 

Gavin then had Cllr Anne Norton, Mayor of Ennis, on the line to talk about flight cancellations in Shannon which have affected up to 1,000 passengers.

 

A show about the Easter Rising, which has taken Dublin by storm, opens in glór in Ennis tomorrow night (Thurs., Oct. 13). 'Dublin Burning' has been created by Mike Hanrahan and Brendan Begley and it tells the story of revolution through songs, music, poetry and stories of the era spanning 1890 to 1916. Brendan Begley, (Accordion) Co-creator of 'Dublin Burning', joined Gavin on the line to talk about the show.

 

Morning Focus ended with Burren Cycling Club are hosting the second year of Ennis Cyclocross in Lees Road this Sunday (Oct. 16) The programme begins at 10am with kids racing and continues through youth, ladies, novice and B races before culminating in the A race at 12.30pm, riders from all over Munster are expected to compete so it’s an event not to be missed. Brian Nevin, Sales and Marketing Manager, Shannon Heritage, joined Gavin live in studio to promote the race.
