The Afternoon Show – Friday February 8th 2013

Joining The Afternoon Show today was Aine Hensey from Oidhreact an Chlair in Miltown Malbay. She discussed the first annual Concertina Cruinniú, which takes place in the hometown of Willie Clancy until Sunday next. The event is hosted by Oidhreacht an Chláir (OAC) in Miltown where concertina playing has been an integral part of traditional music life for centuries and where it is currently thriving. It’s also the first of 10 local events that “Solas an Chláir” – a commemorative torch specifically designed for Clare’s year of the Gathering, will be present at during the 11 remaining months of the year.

Paul O’Meara is a journalist with the Leinster Leader and joined the show as today marks the 30th anniversary of one of the world’s most infamous kidnappings – Shergar.  The greatest racehorse of his day was stolen from Ballymany stud, Co. Kildare on February 8th, 1983.  The horse was never found, and rumours about who was responsible for the kidnapping persist to this day.
