The Afternoon Show – Friday January 25th 2013

Joining Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan on The Afternoon Show today, Marian Murnane, Accommodations Manager with Hotel Doolin and the Armada, Spanish Point was a guest of the show to discuss a special hotel industry conference, taking place this weekend. The annual conference for the Irish Hospitality Sector takes place in Spanish Point tomorrow – up for discussion will be standards in hotels nationwide and maintaining quality in difficult times. The Irish Accommodation Services Institute (IASI) will hold the conference and also the National Accommodation Awards tomorrow night. The Institute, which was founded in 1985, was formed as a forum to promote standards and share experiences within the Hospitality Industry.

Clare FM’s Doireann Wylde was out and about meeting people on the streets to find out their views on man flu. We all know someone who’s been struck down by this most dangerous of afflictions in recent weeks, and while us women refer to it as man flu – and are more than a little sceptical about how bad it really is – it turns out that it might not be a myth after all. Research at Durham University claims that men really do suffer more with coughs and colds, as they have more temperature receptors in the brain. This causes them to experience the symptoms more acutely than women.

Aoibhinn McBride from Her.ie joined the show to discuss the controversy surrounding Beyonce this week as it was revealed she had lip synced her performance of the US National Anthem at the second inauguration of President Barack Obama – many were shocked to learn that one of the world’s greatest singers mimed her way through The Star Spangled banner. The cat was left out of the bag when the Military Corps Band who were playing for the event let slip that she had pre recorded the song.

Noreen Ellerker from The Hunt Museum also spoke to Máire about a very special exhibition, which was launched earlier this week – of Ireland’s most famous couturier Sybil Connolly. On show are her fashion and design work in ceramics, crystal and textiles, the fascinating scrapbooks, which catalogue her career through the 1950’s and 1960’s. Sybil Connolly was one of the first to launch Irish fashion on the international market. Her arrival in America was marked by the headline on the cover of Life Magazine ‘Irish Invade Fashion World’ on August 10, 1953. Famous clients included Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Andrews and Merle Oberon. The exhibition runs until Sunday march 3rd.

Colette Ryan from Headsup.ie spoke about the Five Peaks Challenge, which takes place in August 2013 in a bid to raise funds for Rehab’s suicide prevention programme – Headsup. Now is the time to start training if you want to climb 17, 373 feet in just one weekend!  The five highest peaks of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales are Carrantuohill, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, Slieve Donard and Mount Snowdon.  You have exactly one month to make up your mind and register (Feb 22nd).

Kevin McGillicuddy from Clare FM Sport gave us a preview of tonight’s Sideline View and a look ahead to weekend sports fixtures. The Clare senior hurlers are playing UL in the Waterford Crystal cup quarter-final this Sunday in Sixmilebridge. It’s Clare’s first game of the year.
