The Afternoon Show – Friday November 1st

On the Afternoon Show today, Peter O’Connell, Margaret O’Brien and Ciana Campbell joined Máire for the Friday Panel. They discussed the issue of pre nups – the Irish Farmers Association is recommending that pre-nuptial agreements be given recognition under Irish law. As it stands such agreements are not officially recognised in Ireland but they are legal. The organisation says there is fear within the farming community over the change in social structures in Ireland and the level of family break up. They also talked about how “Friends don’t bug each others telephones”, which was the view of the Tánaiste this week over the ongoing bugging of phones by US authorities. Eamon Gilmore says it’s not appropriate for the U-S to be spying on Ireland or any other European state. German media have reported that the US bugged German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone for more than a decade – and that the surveillance only ended a few months ago. It has also been reported that the NSA spied on French diplomats in Washington and at the UN, and that it conducted surveillance on millions of French and Spanish telephone calls, among other operations against US allies. The Panel also looked ahead to the County Senior Championships. Sixmilebridge take on Clonlara in a Hurling Semi Final on Saturday, while on Sunday Newmarket face Ballyea. In the football – the Quarter Final between Doonbeg and Cooraclare has been fixed for Saturday, while the Semi Final of Cratloe V Eire Og is on Sunday.

Richard Mulcahy from The Secret Millionaire also spoke to Máire about a major charity event ahead of Christmas. ‘Stars, Choirs & Carols’ will see over 500 choirs gather together at Croke Park on December 19th, in aid of Cliona’s Foundation and The Sanctuary. The event will gather under the Croke Park roof to break a Guinness World Record to become the world’s largest group of Christmas Carol singers whilst raising funds for the two Irish charities. Stars, Choirs and Carol is the brainchild of Richard Mulcahy who appeared on RTE’s Secret Millionaire in 2012. Richard spent ten days in Limerick undercover. He spent time with various organisations and charities and was so inspired by the Cliona Ring Foundation he decided to dedicate his time to help raise funds for the charity. Cliona’s Foundation, a unique charity providing financial assistance for families with critically ill children in Ireland, and The Sanctuary, a charity bringing stillness and harmony into peoples’ lives, will both benefit from the event. See www.tickets.ie  for tickets and their website www.starschoirsandcarols.ie for details
