Today’s Afternoon Show featured the Friday Panel.  Máire was joined by Ann Cronin, an Artist and PhD students, John Quinlivan, formerly of Shannon Development and actor Eleanor Feely. Among the discussions held by the panel was the issue of violence on TV.  It comes as Irish TV series – Love/Hate attracted controversy this week for a scene that came just seconds into the new season. A teenager is seen shooting a cat with a submachine gun. He then laughs about it with a friend. Although no actual animal was injured, the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) has called for a boycott of the show.  The panel discussed the controversy and we asked are we de-sensitised to violence on TV?

The panel also spoke about last weekend’s Seanad Referendum. It was closer than expected and it went against what all the earlier opinion polls had indicated but the Seanad Referendum count created quite a stir – The government were slow to concede defeat until the last count was in due to how narrow the margin was. So it seems the upper house is here to stay – In Clare the electorate voted Yes to scrap the Seanad by just over 51%

Meanwhile, Ann Cronin, who has spoken on The Afternoon Show in the past about her views on emigration, on her and her family’s prospects in Ireland and the issue of “brain drain”. Ann has decided to opt for emigration and will re-locate to New Zealand next week. She spoke candidly about her reasons for leaving and her hopes for the future.

Alison Cullinane is from Shannon and is the 2013 Winner of Ireland’s Next Top Alternative Model. This Summer Alison entered Ireland’s Next Top Alternative Model competition through Chunk.ie – an online alternative magazine and website.  She was crowned the overall winner and as part of her prize won a professional photo shoot, hair styling and make up and will feature on the chunk.ie 2014 calendar.  She discussed her style and standing out in a crowd.
