The Afternoon Show – Friday October 25th 2013

On Friday’s Afternoon Show Máire Moynahan was joined by the Friday Panel, which this week consisted of Gearoid Mannion of Tom Mannion Travel, Anne Norton of Clare Crusaders and Adrian Fennell from Ennis Toastmasters.  They discussed the main news stories from the past week including the Ryanair announcement at Shannon Airport. Ryanair is to open 8 new routes from Shannon. The airline says the move will support 300 new on site jobs at the and deliver an extra 300,000 passengers. The routes will go to Berlin, Faro, Fuerteventura, Krakow, Munich, Nice, Paris and Warsaw from April of next year. Ryanair says today’s announcement is in direct response to the Government’s decision to scrap the 3 euro travel tax. They also spoke about childhood obesity. One in four Irish children are overweight or obese. HSE, Safefood and Healthy Ireland are launching a new public health campaign today to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic in Ireland. They are hoping that by highlighting everyday habits associated with weight gain, the issue can be tackled by parents before there are long term health risks. They also talked about how this week Roy Keane all come in for criticism from Alex Ferguson in his latest autobiography. The former Manchester United boss has this week launched his latest autobiography and among the highlights, he says Roy Keane had to go as he intimidated other players. In response Roy Keane said Sir Alex doesn’t know the meaning of loyalty.

Author Sheila Bugler was also a guest of the Afternoon Show. Sheila is a first time novelist based in Eastbourne in the UK however she has strong links to Clare.  Her debut crime novel Hunting Shadows has just been published and she comes to The Ennis Book Shop tomorrow to sign copies. The story centres on Ellen Kelly, a second-generation Irish detective and will feature in further books in the new series.

 

Catherine Ryan from the Clare Sports partnership spoke to Máire about a special event in Ennis tonight.  Weight Watchers are hosting a Fashion Show tomorrow Friday October 25th at 7.30pm in Treacy’s West County Hotel. All 36 models both male and female are currently on their weight loss journey. Each leader has chosen one model to tell their amazing story. Rita Fagan MD Weight Watchers Ireland will be the guest speaker and she will chat to these 4 models that have lost over 30 stone between them. There will be numerous spot prizes and MC on the night is Aoibhin Garrihy of Fair City fame. All proceeds from the show go to Clare Haven House and Pieta House. Tickets €15 will be on sale at the door.
