The Afternoon Show – Monday February 25th 2013

On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Michael McLoughlin, the Head of Advocacy with Youth Work Ireland spoke to Gavin Grace about how a new survey of Irish teenagers has found the recession is having a major impact on young people as they prepare for third level education and working life.  The Irish League of Credit Unions/Youth Work Ireland compiled the Teens and Money survey which found 4 out of 5 young people worry about the costs associated with 3rd level education, while only 58 percent say they expect to find work in Ireland after college.  44 percent of teens believe that their family has been seriously affected by the recession. Youth Work Ireland said the survey shows that now more than ever we need community based supports for young people.

Fiona Ni Mhaonaigh is from the Tulla Says NO Group. This past Sunday saw the beginning of a weekly protest in Tulla.  The gathering is inspired by a similar protest in the Cork village of Ballyhea, which has been held every Sunday for around 2 years.  Around 20 people attended yesterday’s gathering, and another will be held this Sunday.  It takes place at Tulla Court House from 11:30 to 12:30. She joined Gavin to discuss.
