The Afternoon Show – Monday September 16th 2013

On The Afternoon Show today Maire Moynahan was joined by Oisin McGrath from Ennis. Oisin is a member of the Clare Men’s team who this weekend won the National Surf Lifesaving Championship. Competitors at the National Surf Lifesaving Championships had their skills and stamina tested in events that simulated emergency rescue scenarios at Curracloe beach in Wexford this past weekend. The winning team from Clare dominated the competition with the fittest lifesavers nationwide at this annual gala of lifesaving. Ireland’s best lifesavers were challenged in open water conditions off the Wexford coast to rescue simulated "casualties" in testing run, swim, board rescue, surf ski races and ocean man events. However the dominance of Clare came through with exceptional results with three Clare teams in the first four teams – Clare Men’s, Clare Ladies and the Clare Men’s B team.

Conor Faughnan is the Director of Consumer Affairs at AA Roadwatch and joined the show to discuss the results of their latest survey, which shows that Irish drivers still cannot seem to put down their phones while driving. Almost 80% of motorists witness someone using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving at least once a day. That’s according to an AA Motor Insurance survey of over 16,000 people. Despite this figure, less than 17% of motorists admitted to using their phone while driving. In fact 39% say they never do.

Philip Moreau, Gardening Expert and Horticulturist from Glenbrook Nurseries in Tuamgraney was in studio to answer all of your queries. Today he covered apple trees, the different species, what’s good for eating and cooking with, also what to plant in window boxes and baskets for the winter, how to trim back heather and also how to propagate fuchsia.
If you have a question for Philip please send your queries in to afternoon@clare.fm

Karen Casey from Trocaire also joined Máire on the show to let listeners know how they can support the charity. Trócaire works in over 20 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. In 2012-13 Trócaire’s programme of work benefited over 2.7 million people across a number of programme areas such as human rights, gender equality, climate change, HIV and emergency relief. Now in its fourth year – Trad for Trócaire 2013 will take place from the 27th September until the 4th October and this year Clare FM will be teaming up with the charity to help find the best Trad for Trócaire session! We’re looking for local groups to organise a session and raise money for Trócaire and invite Clare FM down to your broadcast live from your event! Stay tuned to The Afternoon Show for details on how you can get involved. To organise a Trad for Trócaire session, you can order your Trad pack now on www.trocaire.org/trad.

Orla Ni Eili from the Clare Immigrant Support Centre let us know about how the group is hosting a Coffee Morning in aid of Cahercalla Hospice tomorrow – Tuesday 17th September from 1pm until 2.30pm at their offices at Unit 13, Carmody Street Business Park, Carmody Street, Ennis. All proceeds go directly to Cahercalla Hospice.
