The Afternoon Show – Thursday April 18th 2013

Joining Gavin Grace on today’s edition of The Afternoon Show was Jill Kerby, the Personal Finance Columnist with the Sunday Times. We’ll finally find out what’s in the controversial Personal Insolvency Guidelines today. A reasonable standard of living will be set out for those looking for a debt deal with their bank. It emerged last month that people may be advised to give up their jobs if their income is less than childcare costs. Jill says if it’s anything like they UK, the guidelines will be flexible enough.

Ed Donnelly is the Munster GAA PRO and spoke to Gavin about how Clare’s Minor Hurlers and their supporters were left disappointed last night with the late cancellation of the match with Waterford in Fraher Field in Dungarvan. It was cancelled due to high winds, 20 minutes before throw-in in the interest of player safety. With a few hundred people already in the ground, their statement says, it was not feasible or practical to issue people with refunds. No date has been set for the re-fixed game, though entry for that match will be free.

John Gleeson, Limerick Pharmacist and member of the Irish Pharmacy Union was also a guest of the show to give some helpful tips and advice for hay fever sufferers. Hay fever, known medically as Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, affects 20% of people in Ireland and involves an allergic reaction to pollen from trees, grasses and flowers. Those who suffer from hay fever have to cope with symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, coughing and headaches, all of which have a serious impact on their overall well being. 60% of hay fever sufferers experience sleep deprivation as a result of their symptoms.

Also joining Gavin in studio today was PJ Curtis  from Kilnaboy, a Music Producer and Writer –of “The Road of Souls” and actors from Corofin Dramatic Society who feature in the production – Michael Keane and Emmet O’Doherty. The  award winning short film ‘The Road of Souls’ will be screened on RTE 2 Monday 22nd of April. Written by Kilnaboy resident PJ Curtis it is about a moment in time that captures the imagination of an eleven year old boy. The story follows Patrick, played by Emmet O’Doherty, as he discovers a stranger in his life has more to offer than he first thought. Set in County Clare in the 1950’s, the film is a charming tale of childhood memories and the moments that we remember forever. The greatest triumph of the production is the fact that the cast is made up of locals from the Kilnaboy area and members of the Corofin Dramatic Society, all of whom are appearing on the big screen for the first time. PJ also has a new book coming out which Garrett Daly, Director and Co-Producer of The Road of Souls will turn into a feature film next year.

Sadhbh McCoy from Clonlara is in her 4th year BA at Mary Immaculate and is the Director of CATS – her 3rd production for MIDAS (MIC Dramatic Arts Society). She is currently an assistant teacher with Spotlight Stage School, which she attended from the age of 5, and she has been involved in shows with Limerick Panto Society, Limerick Musical Society and Cecilian Musical Society.  Following the enormous success of Grease in 2012, MIDAS return to the stage with their 14th annual musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS. The show runs tonight and tomorrow in the Lime Tree Theatre at Mary I.

Stephen McDermott or resident Clare FM Movie Reviewer discussed horror remake – Evil Dead, which sees a demon wreak havoc on the world. Supposedly 50-thousand gallons of fake blood was used in the making of the film – the most ever seen on screen! and Olympus has Fallen featuring Aaron Eckhart and Gerard Butler.
