On The Afternoon Show today, Gavin Grace spoke with Alex Eliseev, a Senior Reporter at Eyewitness News on Talk Radio 702 in Johannesburg. They discussed today’s breaking news that athlete Oscar "Blade Runner" Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend. The Olympian and Paralympian is due in court after the model – Reeva Steenkamp – was shot inside his home in South Africa. Police have also confirmed that there have been previous incidents at Mr. Pistorius’ home, but declined to expand on what those incidents were. Detectives also played down earlier reports she may have been mistaken for a burglar.

Harriet Parsons is the Services Co-ordinator at Bodywhys and joined the show to talk about Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which is currently underway until February 17th. She also spoke about a new campaign called “SeeMySelf”, which is a pioneering new online psycho-educational programme launched by Bodywhys – the Eating Disorders Association of Ireland. Its aim is to support teenagers with self-esteem issues and to help prevent these developing into eating disorders or other related psychological problems.  For more details see www.bodywhys.ie

Tom Toomey is a Limerick Historian and member of the Meelick and Cratloe Commemoration Group.  He spoke to Gavin to discuss how 91 years after two Limerick city teenagers were shot dead by the RIC and Black and Tans in a South East Clare ambush; a memorial is to be erected to their memory. Known locally as the ‘Blackwater tragedy’, the deaths of Thomondgate brothers Aidan and Cecil O’Donovan are the subject of a detailed study the Limerick historian who will give a public lecture at Browne’s pub in Parteen at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20th.

Dr. Margaret-Anne Lawlor is a Lecturer in Marketing and Marketing Communications at Dublin Institute of Technology and joined Gavin today – St. Valentine’s Day – to discuss how the feast day has become one of the most commercial on the calendar. As long as there’s consumer interest in Valentine’s Day, Dr. Lawlor says the commercial opportunities will follow!

Daniel Flanagan, Chairman of the Shannon Musical Society also joined the show to talk about their current show. Shannon Musical Society presents “The Producers” by Mel Brooks.
