The Afternoon Show – Thursday February 7th 2013

On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace spoke with Paul O’Callaghan. Paul is the Floorball Coach with Team Ireland who have returned home to a heroes’ welcome last evening following an incredible performance at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea. James Murphy from Corbally, Quin returned home with a bronze medal. 

Oisin Collins is a Journalist with Joe.ie and joined the show to discuss how Monopoly – one of the best-loved board games of all time has been slightly revamped! Following an online vote the iron is out and in its place – a cat!  Since 1935 the US real estate game featured tokens including; the hat, the car, the boat, the Scotty dog, the shoe and the iron – there had been runners up including a helicopter, a robot, a diamond ring and a guitar.

Clare FM’s Deputy News Editor Trudy Waters also joined Gavin in studio to discuss the breaking news on Ireland’s bank debt. Ireland and the European Central Bank have reportedly reached an agreement on the promissory note for IBRC.Reuters reports that the deal was struck this afternoon following the marathon session in the Dáil overnight to liquidate the former Anglo Irish Bank. However the Department of Finance refused to comment on whether an agreement had been reached.
 

Singer Songwriter extraordinaire Phil Coulter was also a guest of The Afternoon Show and spoke about his career to date.  Phil is one of the enduring talents in the music business, having enjoyed success with hits in the 60’s, 70’s 80’s and 90’s with a tally of 23 platinum, 32 gold and 51 silver discs.  Phil Coulter has contributed at least four titles to the list of Great Irish Songs – the anthems“The Town I Loved So Well”, “Ireland’s Call” and the haunting “Scorn Not His Simplicity” and “Steal Away”. He has achieved world-wide recognition as a hit songwriter, notching up chart entries with a diverse list of acts from Elvis Presley to The Bay City Rollers.  He’s in teh Lime Tree Theatre Limerick on Feb 28th and in Glor on March 15th.

Donal Minihane from Hotel Doolin joined the show to talk about a brand new event – The Doolin Short Story Competition and Writers Weekend. The competition winners will be judged by Irish novelist and Playwright John MacKenna. The winners will win prizes of €1000, €600 and €300 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. The winners will be announced at the inaugural Doolin Writers Weekend on the 24th to the 26th May 2013. 

Clare FM presenter and resident film critic Stephen McDermott was also in studio to review two new movies on relaease  – Hitchcock, featuring Anthony Hopkins as the enigmatic director and Helen Mirren and also new animation – Wreck It Ralph with John C. Reilly.
