The Afternoon Show – Thursday May 23rd 2013

Speaking to Clare FM’s Gavin Grace on today’s edition of The Afternoon Show was Director General of the Construction Industry of Ireland – Tom Parlon. The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) has published a range of proposals aimed at clamping down on the black economy in the construction sector.  The proposals were outlined during an Oireachtas Committee meeting, which looked at how the black economy is damaging legitimate operators in the construction industry.  The CIF believes that in the current economic climate it is important that all construction companies and sole traders act responsibly and comply with all the legal obligations.  No one should be avoiding their taxation requirements or misusing social welfare payments.

Dr. Marie Coggins is a Lecturer at the School of Physics and a member of the Ryan Institute at NUI Galway.  She joined the show to discuss their latest research, which claims that the number of deaths caused by smoking in the home could be comparable to the number of road deaths recorded in Ireland. According to the NUI Galway-led research, the concentration of particulate pollution in the homes of smokers (who smoke indoors) is six-times higher than the World Health Organisation’s recommendation for general outdoor air quality, 10 times the allowable level for healthy breathing in homes and up to 17 times greater than levels actually found outdoors.

The parade will hail the arrival of the great ‘Liberator’ or the great ‘Emancipator’ as O’Connell was known and who with his colleagues will make a speech from the Sliding Rock.

Terri is a prominent figure in the Belfast punk scene and founder of the Good Vibrations record shop and label, responsible for bands such as The Undertones, Rudi and The Outcasts. He is the subject of a new film, entitled ‘Good Vibrations, which chronicles his instrumental role in developing Belfast’s punk-rock scene. As part of this weekend’s Doolin Writers Festival, Terri will speak about his memoir, punk music and his newly-released cinema hit ‘Good Vibrations’. He will follow his talk up with a DJ set. The festival is organised by the Irish Writers’ Centre and Hotel Doolin.

Noel O’Driscoll is an O’Callaghan’s Mills native and joined Gavin in studio to let listeners know about the O’Callaghan’s Mills Community Gathering Weekend, which takes place this weekend from the 24th to the 25th May.  There are numerous events planned to celebrate the Gathering in the parish including an historical talk, exhibition of memorabilia, black pudding night, hurling blitz and much more.

Stephen McDermott, Clare FM presenter and our resident Movie Reviewer also gave us the latest on what’s happening in the world of cinema; particularly he discussed the hype surrounding “The Great Gatsby”.  The newly released film is based on F.
