The Afternoon Show – Thursday November 8th 2012

Joining Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan on The Afternoon Show was Paul Curley. Paul is the President of the Student’s Union at NUI Galway.  It follows today’s news that thousands of students have yet to receive their grants as the new online application process is backlogged. The Tanaiste says the Education Minister has instructed Universities to ensure that students who have not yet received their grants can continue to attend lectures. Eamon Gilmore dismissed claims that the government’s not dealing urgently with the processing of thousands of student grants. The Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin says the new online system for processing grants has been a fiasco – and thousands of students are still waiting for their money. 

John Rattigan, Curator of the Clare Museum and Rosemary Power, minister and folklorist were also in studio to discuss how Clare Museum will be hosting a number of public talks titled ‘Remembering the stories’, in conjunction with the exhibition on the First and Second World Wars and to mark the start of the Decade of Commemoration. The first talk on 8th November will be by Olive Carey and will be titled ‘An Officer and a Gentleman: Brigadier-General Cuthbert Lucas’. On the 15th, Jakub Kacprzak, will give an illustrated lecture called ‘Uprising 1944’. The final talk by Rosemary Power on the 29th is titled ‘Living with the enemy – Japan’s Burma railway and the human aftermath’.  All talks will be held at 8pm and admission will be Free.

On The Afternoon Show we also heard from the fourth charity set to benefit from Clare FM’s 50 Cent Appeal – The Irish Wheelchair Association Clare.  Máire met with Caroline Browne, the local Manager, Margaret Queally Hurley, a volunteer, and Paul Glennon and Anne Dunne who access services locally.

Jenny Walsh Bassett of Culturlann Sweeney, Kilkee also discussed this weekend’s events for the Kilkee Playwright Festival. The festival is produced by Banner Productions and will be taking place in Culturlann Sweeney Theatre in Kilkee. The festival will run from Friday 9th November until Sunday 11th November 2012. This year’s festival includes rehearsed readings, performances, talks and workshops.  Friday 9th November. The first performance is at 7.45pm on Friday – Colours of My Mind by The Creative Energies Group. Followed by Uncomfortably Numb with acoustic set by Dylan Tighe  at 9pm. On Saturday there will be 2-hour workshops ‘ writing for stage’ and at 8pm there will be a performance of Sparks by Pat Hynes. Contact their box office for tickets details and more on 065 925 0769.
