On The Afternoon Show today Máire spoke to Suzanne Costello, CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland about the controversy surrounding Arthur’s Day. Numerous groups have criticised Arthur’s Day – branding it as a reckless attempt to promote the consumption of alcohol to young people, with many describing Arthur’s Day as a major example of how drinks companies use sponsorship of music events to encourage young people to drink alcohol. Earlier this week, doctors at the Royal College of Physicians also criticised the event – saying it glamourises alcohol and could disrupt attempts to fight binge-drinking.
Donna Gregson of the Clare Tourism Forum also joined the show as 2 Clare destinations will fly the flag for Ireland in this year’s 10th annual 2013 World Responsible Tourism Awards. Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark and Loop Head Peninsula have been shortlisted alongside 6 other sustainable tourism destinations and organisations in the ‘Best Destination for Responsible Tourism’ category. The awards ceremony takes place on Wednesday 6th November during World Responsible Tourism Day in London.
Michael Collins from Newmarket on Fergus let listeners know about how four Clare residents are travelling to Germany to run the Berlin Marathon in a bid to raise funds for Clare Crusaders. Singer, Song Writer and now a TV Presenter John Spillane was also a guest of the show. John has released his 9th studio album, ‘Life In An Irish Town’ earlier this month. The album, his first since 2011’s ‘A Rock To Cling To”, is the soundtrack to the forthcoming TG4 series ‘Spillane an Fánaí’ (Spillane The Wanderer). Spillane an Fánaí is a six part series presented by John. Combining off-the-cuff encounters with local people, interviews and music sequences, he spends a week in six different locations, working in a pub and venturing out to meet a host of locals in search of musical inspiration for his song writing in the uniqueness and character of small town life – all as gaeilge.
